I'm taking my mom to visit a relative in London in early September. I'd like to take these two ladies out for at least one nice lunch while we're there. Any suggestions would be welcome.
They're both in their 80s and don't do particularly well with spicey ethnic foods (I'll hit those places on my own, I suppose!), but they do appreciate good food. Is the River Cafe still drawing rave reviews? Someplace like that might be perfect.
We'll be in west London but can move around pretty well on public transport.
Thanks! |

Check out the thread "Would you like to plan my trip to London" under Around the World on a Zucchini in the forums.
I got a lot of good advice about restaurants from that when we were planning our trip. _________________ L'appetit vient en mangeant. -Rabelais |

I was in London for the weekend just a few weeks ago (went to Chelsea Flower Show) and had lunch at a really nice resto. Roast, which is at Borough Market (a permanent farmers market next to the Thames). The cheese plate that I had for dessert was divine! I will definitely go back there again!

Olive magazine just had a whole section about al fresco dining... and early Autumnal outdoor dining is one of my favourite things to do. They reviewed Inn The Park, Oliver Peyton's restaurant in St James Park, near Buckingham Palace. It seems like a very appropriate place for ladies and the reviews were quite good. Here's their website:

Hope this helps!

If you will be in the Kensington area, I'd recommend Launceston Place. You can read more about it on London Eating. (http://www.london-eating.co.uk/1701.htm) It's a very classy place with really nice food, and well, when I was there, there were quite a few women of a certain age. The only problem would be the arrival--it's not too far from High Street Ken tube or Gloucester Road tube, but probably too far of a walk for your companions? So I would recommend a taxi. The street it's on is really pretty though, so a little walk afterwards to admire the houses might be nice.
I might also suggest Tea at the Ritz. It's pricey, but the atmosphere is worth it. I took my mom and her friend there (late 60s) and they loved it--particularly the doorman who was just so sweet to them.

Best place is Anchor & Hope, a pub south of the river right near Waterloo Station on a road called The Cut.

You can't book but at lunch you should be ok, and it's nothing too fancy, but good solid British food updated and SO yummy. A proper London experience. |

is a GREAT place...but do you think though that it might be too crowded/loud/modern for two women in their 80s? _________________ http://kristainlondon.typepad.com

If you're in South London, try Chez Bruce in Wandsworth - I believe they're open for Lunch most days - it's only three stops on the train from town so not too far. I absolultey love the place and am sad that I'm moving away from there next week! |
