When I arrived in France to study abroad, one of the first things our group was told was that smiling at people would be considered an invitation. All the small-towners kept saying how incredibly rude it was not to smile at people and proceeded to do so at any and all opportunities. The girls were all hit on in various ways and later stuck pretty much to themselves.

Coming from NYC, I noticed virtually no difference in Metro behavior here and in Paris. But it was nice to be able to "observe" others with impunity.
