Here you are, CB, snapshots of a koala, taken in Adelaide last summer during the hot weather...

Sorry if they're too big for anyone's monitor - let me know if it's a problem and I'll resize them.

He's cute, isn't he?

Yes he's adorable! Poor thing looks hot, slurpin' up the cool water. Are those beautiful children yours?

How cool! We have koalas at the LA zoo but I've never seen them do anything but sit in the trees kinda stoned out on eucalyptus in their indoor red-light enclosure. You have to be a very good observer because they sit so still they're hard to see in the foliage. More natural, perhaps but that guy looks like he's having fun!

Who are the kinder?

This was actually from an email that was sent to me earlier in the year, I think it was doing the email circuit, but there was a bit of local media discussion about it and it turns out that the photos were taken in my suburb! The captions on the photos were 'Hot in Adelaide #1 & #2'.

So I don't actually know who the kids are, but they could be neighbours that we haven't met yet.

Several other friends have had fairly close encounters with these little guys, including my parents and their neighbours who hav both had one visit their backyards. And all these places are very suburban, all within 20 minutes drive of the centre of the city.

Rainey, koalas usually don't do a lot. I'm not sure but I think it's something to do with the eucalypt leaves they eat, they do kinda get stoned on 'em, and then they are nocturnal as well. I remember taking Tom to a wildlife park when he was little and we were with a guy who hunts. He spotted a koala right up in a tree that I would have never seen.

Our local freeway has pieces of heavy-duty plastic mesh at regular intervals along the concrete divider in the middle of the road. When I first moved here I couldn't work out what they were for till my mum enlightened me - they're to help koalas cross the street!

And even though I called them 'koala bears' in CB's Greece thread, they're not bears at all. They're marsupials.

I completely missed this thread until today! Thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday, and I loved the koala pictures. Since Clotilde and I have the same birthday, next year we've decided to have a joint birthday party at some convenient location in the US, and all are invited. It will be BYOB.

I'm hijacking this thread and calling it Happy Birthday to Me! I'm - shhush... 6-0 today! Actually it's been like Christmas here, got so many prezzies from my husband and son, including a laptop as I am spending too much time here on my husband's computer. I still think I am 30-something .... apart from the aches and pains, but at least I am still here! Our celebration will be tomorrow night, out for a meal.
