I ran across this cute "Periodic Table" for safe food storage...

It's funny that Roquefort can sit aging in a cave for months, and fish sauce can sit fermenting in the sun for months, and then go bad relatively quickly in a refrigerator!

I see that maraschino cherries seem to be indestructible--that red juice will stain anything too!

Surprised to see that sugar has a 2 year cutoff--sugar doesn't "go bad", does it?

Vegemite will join maraschino cherries in the Indestructible Waltz..

Gingerpale, I also noticed that Cheez Wiz is apparently indestructible - that in itself should be reason not to eat it! Shocked

I am sorely tempted to print out a copy of this and slip it to my flatmates who both have a horrible tendency to keep everything in the fridge until it's about to come back to life, get up and walk away (or take over the kitchen and kill everything in its path) but unfortunately they'd immediately know who it was from... *sigh*

Rachel, I think you may find that Cheez Wiz is unfit for human consumption at day one. I certainly never dared taste it or Kraft Dinner, that other delicacy from my adopted country so I can't say for sure but if they taste as bad as they look... Give me real cheese any day.

Naturally chocolate isn't there. It doesn't stay in a fridge long enough to go off. Wine doesn't go off either... it just becomes wine vinegar.

Andrew,

Good Brits go to Languedoc unless they are middle class - then they go to Tuscany. Naughty Brits still go to Brighton in Sussex and very bad Brits go to Basingstoke and it serves them right too.

Holy buckets! Peanut butter actually lasts 4 months?!

I had no idea!

We can't get one jar to survive multiple spoon attacks longer than two weeks!

(Might I recommend Smart Balance, folks? Its pretty awesome stuff if you like it roasty and not full of sugar)

I think they must be referring to "real" peanut butter. Skippy has got to last for several months, unrefrigerated.

I tend to err on the side of caution when deciding to throw away old food. You only need to get salmonella once to really learn. Two year old taco sauce? I don't think so.

Also on the list of odd food expiration facts. I don't think honey ever goes bad (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that).

Overall, a very handy list.

Did anyone notice that bacon bits supposedly never go bad? In theory, they once came from pigs...
