25 - 30. The first one I bought in France in the 1970s and I collected them over the years until I stopped working in downtown San Francisco in the 1990s. |

Sorry to pitch in late with this, but I find etymology etc. very interesting:
I thought Paris owed its name Ville lumière to the introduction of street-lighting there by Gabriel Nicolas de La Reynie, so that lumière really does refer to light?
Lyon is the Ville DES Lumière - the town of the intellectual lights. |

cigalechanta....look a little closer at your monitor--ExpatSteve is in LERNE, not leme--the "r" and "n" are simply too close together. |

chocotte....another fascinating and plausible explanation, thank you! I found this on the 'net:
"La Reynie is generally held responsible for turning Paris from a squalid medieval city into the bright modern metropolis that came to be known as "the City of Lights". His most famous case was the "Affair of the Poisons" a scandal of witchcraft and poisoning that spread all the way to the King's mistress." |

Don't let the false modesty fool you its pure affectation: I was brought up in the belief that a gentleman should always appear modest and I always try to be a gentleman. Or at least to appear to be one.
I suspect that I'd have had more fun being a cad, or, quite possibly, a bounder: I never had the looks for a scoundrel.
You also have to consider the possibility that i am taking my nearest and dearest to Paris against their will because I want to go. But then why would I possibly want to go to Paris? _________________ "In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines

Why not just save the ties for suitable occasions? I almost never wear ties these days, whoever came up with the idea of "business casual" should be flogged publicly, but I do like to when the occasion demands or when I feel like.
Failing that, give them to some deserving reli who still works in an environment where people still dress appropriately. _________________ "In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines

David, how fortunate you are to have such a friend who will turn the ties into a "memory quilt". I've seen a number of these and have helped quilt a couple of them. They are a beautiful, longlasting comfort. May it bring a smile to your face whenever you look at it -- and surely when you wrap yourself in its memories. |

A memory Quilt?
What a great idea. I never heard of that before
The image of wrapping oneself in memories, literally, is so appropriate. I gave my wife my grandmother's engagement ring and it is so comforting to feel her close to us at times when we are... Not at our best.
This seems so much more, immediate, personal. _________________ "In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines

back to Ville lumière...actually, I live in Paris, and we don't usually talk of Paris in those words...in France, Lyon is usually Ville des lumières... |

David, what a wonderful idea - please, please share photos of the quilt when it's finished, or even when it's still a 'work in progress'. It will be fabulous!
I've also seen some wonderful handbags made out of silk ties, but a memory quilt is the very best way to use these treasures. _________________ Doing what you like is freedom
