Mao's Last Dancer is a must-see.
It's one of the very few movies that is as good as the book.
Bravo, Bruce Beresford, you have made a wonderful move and a very fitting tribute to its amazing subject. It's a long time since I read the book, but the movie completely captured the essence of the story, and made me feel like I did when I was reading it. A very rare thing. _________________ Doing what you like is freedom

Madame, I just noticed your post above mine about 'In the Loop'. We watched it about a month ago and it's excellent. Can't work out why it's taking so long to be shown in Australia. _________________ Doing what you like is freedom

OK, a bit late, but better late than never....
Saw Julie and Julia the other week when it came out.
A bit slow in parts and I much preferred the Julia bits to the Julie bits. Not sure why exactly, but did feel that Meryl just filled the role and you wanted more of her and Julia's story.
The boulangerie that Julia goes into with the beautiful blue and white painted tiles is actually my local boulanger...... When that scene came on my friend and I looked at each other and both said "that is my/your boulangerie". All the other girls we were with burst out laughing. She is also a real food person and the other girls were super skinny, cigarette smoking, non eating types. So funny and sweet. They only went to that movie because she and I wanted to see it.
Am hoping to see District 9 this weekend. It is apparently fabulous. _________________ If you cannot feel your arteries hardening, eat more cheese. If you can, drink more red wine. Diet is just "die" with a "t" on the end. Exercise is walking into the kitchen. |

"The September Issue"
The tussle between Anna and Grace..
the amazing look of Grace..the sensible fabulous black shoes..the red waterfall hair..'n the out-of-this-world imagination..
I remember her modelling in the '60s...I remember this photo..a young gal in Sydney thinking this was beyond beyond..

Oscar Wilde: “Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.”
methinks he would have quite enjoyed "The September Issue" nevertheless.. _________________ "I've never accepted the external appearance of things as the whole truth. The world is much more elaborate than the nerves of our eye can tell us." - James Gleeson |

ok lads and lassies...try doing that for 2.37!
Stéphane Phavorin danced the role of the mother...stunning! He danced in pointe shoes! Amazing strength. A funny+ scene when he tried to fit his foot in to the sparkling shoe worn by Cinderella at the party..

A joy to watch ~ Nureyev’s choreography and the sheer wonder of The Paris Opera Ballet at work..
Palace Cinema is having a season of films of ballet and opera...ahhhhhhhh! _________________ "I've never accepted the external appearance of things as the whole truth. The world is much more elaborate than the nerves of our eye can tell us." - James Gleeson |

I agree with Debbie. "Julie and Julia" could have been split into two stand-alone movies. JMHO.
The movie came to us this week. We rented "Star Trek." There are some bits that might knot the undergarments of the die-hard fans. I was impressed with the balance of story and special effects--at no time did the latter override the former, and I would guess that someone not acquainted with the series would still enjoy it. _________________ "Food is an important part of a balanced diet..." Star Bright ~ Jane Campions' masterpiece ..
I was lucky enough to see a preview screening..followed by a Q&A with the director and Jan Chapman, the producer.
This morning I was talking with daughter Sophie (we saw it together)..'n I was saying it's still with me...I can see so clearly the fabrics..the expressions..
Ben Whishaw embodies Keats ..
'n the breathtaking performance of Abbie Cornish as Fanny..
A film that's a treasure in cinema history ...IMO
oh 'n I must not forget Paul Schneider's Charles Armitage Brown (Keats' patron)...can I believe Mr Schneider was born in North Carolina! Wait until you hear his amazing accent...stunning work..
Would love to read any comments from those who've seen it..

I've been on a real tear with Jane Austen adaptation lately. Even though Regency England had its flaws, there's a lot to be said for a universe where even the darkest scoundrels mind their manners. _________________ "Food is an important part of a balanced diet..." Fran Leibowitz |
