The cookbook thread was a lot of fun so how about magazines? I currently subscribe to 3.
1. Gourmet Magazine, not because I ever actually cook anything out of it but because of the marvelous photography and the wonderful journalism that includes travel as well as food, and I love reading the descriptions of restaurants I'll never afford.
2. Fine Cooking, more practical and straight forward than Gourmet with lots of interesting little scientific facts about food and cooking.
3. Canadian Living, not just a food magazine, more along the line of Women's Weekly I think, but chocka full of good wholesome easy to reproduce recipes! _________________ Vivant Linguae Mortuae!! |

Food & Wine is my number one pick.
Cooking Light, it shows that healthy can also be amazing.
Cucina Italiana, because it is beautiful.
I was heart broken when Williams-Sonoma stopped production on "Taste".
I also pick up "Cooks Illustrated" once in a while. _________________ "It's watery....and yet there's a smack of ham."

nope!
In Australia we've a newie..a few years young.."Delicious". The layout is fabulous, fun to read, looks fresh, and the recipes are doable and scrumptious.
Australian Vogue Entertaining and Travel is an old favourite. I still have my copies from the late 1970s! When it was "and Travel" less. Such fun to browse through back copies...oh my I can remember making that! It's rather like a part history of Australian food over the past 30 years.
And Erin, the Illustrated I too buy...articles that take you to places new..always fun.
might make some creamed rice...scrumptious either hot or cold..it's a bit cool today which is unusual for Sydney ..usually we're beside ourselves with the heat _________________ "I've never accepted the external appearance of things as the whole truth. My 2 current favourite magazines are Delicious, as mentioned by madame, and Donna Hay. Both magazines are lovely to look at and their recipes are not too difficult in terms of preparation time or availability of ingredients.
Delicious is now published in the UK as well as in Oz, and I guess they have turned their seasons around to suit the northern hemisphere.
I was an avid fan of Australian Gourmet Traveller and had a subscription for many years, but found that I was cooking their recipes less and less so have given that one up.
Madame, I also have old copies of Vogue Entertaining, from the 80s. I still use a couple of recipes from them occasionally. In one is an article and photo of a very young Neil Perry (he had that ponytail even then!) when he was either still an apprentice or a new graduate, working somewhere along the northern beaches of Sydney. My Mum still has hers as well, and also old Successful Entertaining mags.
And do you remember Epicurean? I loved that too and still have quite a few. |

Judy...Successful Entertaining! Now that was simply the height of elegance and style. Somewhere I'd have them..must search and enjoy.
There's an old Vogue guide with 3 ice creams on the cover..perhaps one is a sorbet. Stephanie Alexander's! Maybe from the '80s. It's the copy that has my all time favourite pashka recipe. Once I made it with extra special care for a neighbour for his birthday, and he commented that it was the best I'd ever made....magic indeed. _________________ "I've never accepted the external appearance of things as the whole truth. A couple I read regularly:
Cooks Illustrated - pretty well fool-proof and good recipes. Some good tips (although the reader submitted tips are mostly no-brainers *S*).
Saveur - a little on the "food porn" side and I think the quality has diminished over the years. I suspect also that in some of the recipes certain key steps or ingredients have been omitted. Or is it just my abilities? |

Food magazines could only be described as an obsession with me.
I agree with Judy about Donna Hay and Delicious. I adore both beyond words. I think Donna Hay is absolutely brilliant. Her food styling is just magnificent., which is why I own just about any book she's put out.
I also subscribe to Bon Appetit, Cooking Light, Gourmet, and Cooks Illustrated.
Gourmet has really turned around for me in the last year or so. I used to buy it and get angry at myself for doing it, because I would find nothing in it, but I think Ruth Reichel has really succeeded in making it readable for me, and I also find the layout a lot more appealing. |

Any "Cooking Light" enthusiasts who haven't seen "Eating Well," give it a try. It's been a quarterly for the past few years, but is bumping up to bi-monthly starting with the next issue. Lush photography, great recipes, and more of a focus on just the food and how to make it delicious. It's my new favorite food porn.
My favorites, in order:
1) Cook's Illustrated

2) Eating Well

3) Saveur

Hi,
I am a new foodie to those forums despite having known this website for almost a year We live in Bavaria, at Lake Ammersee in Herrsching (about 40mins southwest of Munich)
But back to the topic
There are several foodie magazines that I regularly buy, most of them having been mentioned (Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Vogue Entertaining&Travel Australia) but the magazine that´s pure heaven for me -and I am more than suprised that it has not been mentioned!!- is the Kiwi foodie magazine Cuisine Wonderful photographie, delicious and easy recipes as well as lots of information on restaurants, wine and travelling. _________________ She is always and never the same |

Call me a philistine, but I don't do food magazines. Anything I could possibly want, I get off the Internet. _________________ Carolina

I'm with Alistair and Magala on this one...
Cook's Illustrated for the absolutely practical info and down to earth recipes and Saveur for that esoteric wordly fix.
I'm glad to hear that Eating Well will go bi-monthly. For a small operation they do a great job.
I've discovered a new publication on the stands called CHOW that seems to be able to laugh at itself (which is SO refreshing compared to other titles). a little kitsch, but always about the food.
but my ultimate food porn is Gastronomica. It does double duty satisfying the hedonist and nerd within...i am a food nerd, yes |

I can't argue with any of the magazines on this list. I subscribe to or borrow from the library many already listed. I often treat myself to some of the foreign (i.e. non-USA mags) Delicious is beautiful and inspiring, Donna Hay is very expensive in the states (almost $10) so I just get it once in awhile. The magazines that have been my must haves lately have been the two put out by BBC -- BBC Good Food (good for everyday kinds of things) and Olive (more feature oriented). My food friends made fun of my British food magazine obession until they check them out for themselves!
If you are in the states, some of the Barnes and Nobles and Borders and some of the better independent bookstores carry these magazines. |
