Very snazzy indeed. I'm glad that Britian hasn't gone to the Euro yet. One of my favorite things I liked about traveling was getting different currrency. But now, it's all the same except for the coin. _________________ Live as if to die tomorrow. Learn as if to live forever.

I think the new designs are beautiful, but after more than 20 years of visiting Britain, I've only just recently gotten to the point where I can reach into my change purse and grab the right coins! These new designs are really going to skew my learning curve! |

I think the New Zealanders had the right idea, getting rid of all coins less than 10c. And making all their coins smaller, so the 'new' 20c piece is the same size as the 'old' 10c piece.
Why do the Poms need 1p and 2p pieces? And I won't even start on the US pennies. Yuk!
I'll keep an eye out for the new UK coins when we're there in a couple of weeks. _________________ Doing what you like is freedom

Judy, we need them due to the fact that "psychological pricing" is ingrained in society...hence everything is £0.99, £1.99, £2.99, £3.99....!! |

In NZ items are still sold at .99c or .95 cents. If paying in cash price is rounded up or down depending. _________________ Barbara |

I don't know Judy, I'm rather found of ol' Abe, even though he does take up some room in my change purse. _________________ Live as if to die tomorrow. Learn as if to live forever.

Why, oh why does the UK not go to the Euro?
Europe is a part of life and, on the whole, a good part.
If it's the history of the thing, perhaps we should go back to Pounds, Shillings & Pence...

Andrew,
The right-wing press in the UK stoke up the anti-Euro feeling. I agree with you, I think being part of Europe could be good for us. Thing is, that we Brits love Europe mostly. There is this bizarre attitude of not being governed by Europeans and keeping our British Sovereignity. There are aspects of European government that could be improved, but that's true of our national government and we won't lose our sovereignity by being part of Europe.
That said, the differences are all to be celebrated I think. I quite like having our Pounds and pence (no more shillings!) it sets our difference out there. I always loved having francs (Swiss and French) when being there. It made me feel like I really was somewhere else. So I miss them and I'm quite happy to have UK quids and pennies.
As for witch burning, we've come a long way from that... we even had a wicked witch as Prime Minister once...!! _________________ Confusion comes fitted as standard. |

Yeah they're nice! Quite modern, aren't they? I like the asymmetric designs. |

I'm sure on my last visit home to Sydney (Australia) the 1 and 2 cent coins weren't in circulation, but I can't remember if the 5 cent piece was (2005).
I've done a lot of travelling and I like the colour and texture of the Australian notes and I like the look and feel of the Euro notes as well but the English pounds look plain except the £50 and I don't see those as often as I'd like.
The new UK coins look quite spiffy _________________

Pavlova, the 5c coin is still alive and well in Australia, and there's no talk of getting rid of it.
The 1c and 2c pieces were discontinued in 1996 and were then melted down to make the bronze medals for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. _________________ Doing what you like is freedom
