G'day C&Zers, I haven't been around much for the last few months 'cos I seem to spend heaps of time on the internet for work-related stuff, with no time left over for social stuff. I've missed you all and all the food-and-other discussions!
Next week Greg and I are taking off on a canoeing adventure to Lake Eyre, which is on the edge of the Simpson Desert in South Australia. It's the largest lake in Australia, usually dry, but the floods in Queensland earlier this year have been flowing south and filling the Lake, the best water volume since 1974.
If we have to wait another 35 years, we'll be too old to paddle, so we're taking this opportunity to pack a big old Canadian canoe with our camping gear and have an adventure.
The Lake Eyre Yacht Club has some good photos and information, for anyone interested. _________________ Doing what you like is freedom

I am jealous!
Second Madames request for photos please.
You will need to post a description of your trip and tell us all about it when you get back. I would love to see the Lake full of water.

Wow, where did those few months go? Our Lake Eyre trip wasn't a great success from the point of view that we didn't get where we had hoped, but it was still an adventure and it's always good to get out in the bush ad away from electricity and all its accompanying distractions.
We were planning on being away for most of June, but there wasn't enough water ( and waaay too much mud - erk!) for us to paddle where we wanted to go, so we cut our trip short and came home.
We had a few minor problems like a hole in the car's radiator which Greg and his Dad fixed with glue and peppercorns (!?!), and a broken back window which we fixed with lots of ducting tape and cardboard. Necessity being the mother of invention and all that.
Amazing birdlife on the river, and the canoeing part was great, but sinking knee-deep in mud whenever we got out of the canoe was not so great. We found some good spots to camp, though, and I caught up on some reading and lots of sleep!
Here are a few photos. The ones with water and trees were taken along the Warburton. The flat ones with no trees were taken on Lake Eyre North and Lake Eyre South

Hi Judy, thanks for these pictures! That is some stark scenery--the lake I mean. I pulled out my Wherrett book and worked out where you were and what it all means . A straight shot up about 400 miles from home, it looks like. (Being in Salt Lake City, I laughed to read about the salty similarities, too.)
The river pics look a lot more lush.
You look--happy! |

Thanks gingerpale. Great to see you again!
The water has probably almost gone from the river by now. I would love to go back there one day and see it without water in it. I'm sure it looks completely different when it's dry.
Happy? Oh yes, I'm always happy when I'm in the outback. There's probably a hint of relief in my face too, in some of the later photos. The prospect of paddling in all that mud for days and days wasn't pleasant. _________________ Doing what you like is freedom
