Have you heard of the whole twenty-ten vs. two thousand and ten debate?
My personal suggestion to settle the discussion would be for everyone to just use the French version, deux mille dix, pronounced more or less as {duh-meel-diss}, but I don't know if that'll take.
What do you say? Have you decided how you plan to pronounce the name of this fresh new year?

Haha-- knowing Americans, here it'll be the one with the fewest syllables. "Twenty-ten" has been rolling off my tongue for a few months now, it came real easy. (Like "C&Z".)
I still don't know what to call the last ten years--we had '70s, '80s, '90's, but in French or English, what to call 2000 through 2010? |

Definitely "Two thousand ten" Deux Mille Dix. I don't like the way 20 10 sounds.
I've just registered and I say Bon Jour to all.

I'm all for deux mille dix....sounds very good! In English is has to be two thousand ten, I agree 2010 doesn't have a good ring to it...
I have also just registered, what a nice way to start the year! Bonjour!!

I can't believe people are actually concerned about this. I mean, with all the real problems in the world, is this really an issue?
Some people just have too much time on their hands. |

KY sometimes quirky little questions are fun to play with for a few minutes.
I'm for twenty-ten myself mais aussi deux mille dix. But vingt cents dix has a nice ring to it! _________________ Vivant Linguae Mortuae!! |

I probably will say Twenty Ten but I do not really like the sound of it ... sounds like I am trying to be trendy ... I much prefer it in French ... and because I come from a French family - more than likely will be using Deux Mille dix regularly .... |

Well as usual and true to myself I will say... Er, what year is it again?!
If anyone looks at me funny, I will pretend I am Dr Who and recently came back from 3010... or 30 10!
I will most likely call it - another damn year! I'm with KYH, it's not important enough to fret over. Either way it won't be an economic boom year. _________________ Confusion comes fitted as standard. |

Some of us have decided that this year will be '10', not 20-10 or 0-10 or 2K10, just '10'. It's not confusing, everyone knows what you're talking about and it's simple!
Pass the word. "The very best to you in 10!" |

I don't know why, but KYH reminds me of dear old Sarape. Hey, Where are you, dear old Sarape?
No more war, not in 2010, 20-10 , 2000+ 10 , "10" , or ever!! |

I don't mind how people pronounce. I'm happy with twenty ten. I more excited it is the year of the tiger...and I'm a tiger. _________________ Barbara |

Hello and Grrrr, Barbara! (I'm a plodding ox and afraid of predators!)
Now that I'm paying attention, I hear most all the news people on TV using "two thousand ten". Maybe an order to standardize from above. |

Ginger, one of the things affecting TV broadcasters is that the AP issues pronounciation guides. Most stations use them, so that there is uniform pronounciation across the country.
The problem is, the AP's decisions aren't necessarily the same as other usage. I remember, for instance, when there was a sudden, radical change in how we said "Saudi Arabia." One of numerous times in which widespread, common usage was suddenly incorrect.
So, as with other things, you pays your money and takes your chances. |
